Lea Karpman 79 ˝ Tooker Avenue Springfield, NJ 07081 (973) 432-9661 lea@fourellemusic.com Violinist and Teacher Instrument Lessons Lea Karpman began studying the recorder in Israel at the age of five. Keenly interested in music, she embarked on her lifelong love of the violin at age seven when she began violin studies with Leon Asa. After emigrating to the United States in 1958, Lea continued her early violin studies with the late Emily Cleve Gregerson of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1967, while an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, she was accepted as an advanced violin student by Elliot Golub, who was at the time a member of the Contemporary Chamber Players at the University of Chicago under Ralph Shapey, and a founder of the acclaimed Music of the Baroque series in Chicago. In 1968, Lea auditioned and was accepted with scholarship to Dartmouth College as a participant in the Convocation of the Arts summer program. Upon her return to Chicago, she studied with the late Morris Gomberg, then Chairman of the Strings Division at the Chicago College of Performing Arts/Roosevelt University. Lea’s studies with Mr.Gomberg were interrupted in 1969 when he stopped teaching due to illness. In the years following, she began to study the chamber music literature, participating in a number of chamber music workshops and master classes including programs at Mannes College of Music/The New School, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Music Mountain, Vassar College, and VMAC (Vermont Music and Art Center). Coaches have included Ida Kavafian [The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center], violinist Maria Radicheva (Manhattan School of Music); Yuri Vodovoz (violin) and Nancy Garniez (piano), both at Mannes College of Music/The New School; and Toby Appel of The Juilliard School. Currently Lea performs with several groups including the Society of Musical Arts in Maplewood; Musica Dolce, the baroque music ensemble of the Highland Park Recorder Society; the Metropolitan Orchestra of NJ. She has also been a guest of The Engelchor Consort at the Princeton Library. In early 2009, Lea began to teach the violin privately through Musika, LLC. and currently works with all levels of students. Lea plays with great sensitivity; her command of the violin is without question, and her joy of making music is apparent to all who have the opportunity of seeing and hearing her play. - Lewis R. Baratz, Ph.D., Director, La Fiocco Reference for Lea Karpman as -- Violin Teacher: Lea began teaching our son Marcus in March of this year and was able to get right in and evaluate him. He has been playing the violin for 4 1/2 years now. She sized him up appropriately and her easy personality was a perfect fit for Marcus. Her flexible schedule and visits to our home has made it easy for 2 working parents to accommodate his lessons. We value her judgement on his playing skills. She is highly recommended for children, especially pre-teens. We are happy to have her. - by Rosemary Valdez, parent of middle school student in Union County. "I want you to know that i think you are a wonderful violin teacher, perfect match! I love my lessons. You also have patience and you put me at ease." - Student "I just wanted to say thank you for the beautiful music at our ceremony! You did a wonderful job! You will be recommended by me to anyone who asks! " - wedding on Sunday 10/25/09: tahleeya | freelance web design nyc
